Research possibilities within the LUMC

LUMC is a modern university medical center for research, education and patient care with a high quality profile and a strong scientific orientation. Its unique research practice, ranging from pure fundamental medical research to applied clinical research, places LUMC among the world top. Researchers at LUMC work together around 10 Research Themes: Academic Pharma, Neuroscience, Cell Tissue & Organ (Tx), Medical Genomics, Prevention & Lifestyle, Lifecourse Epidemiology and Geroscience, Immunity, Cancer, Cardio-Vascular, Infection.

LUMC has collaborative research alliances with leading institutes and consortia around the world. In these alliances, inter-disciplinary and inter-sectoral approaches are used to address current scientific and societally-relevant issues. To find solutions to these complex societal challenges, LUMC is involved in research collaborations and alliances that ideally include non-academic representatives such as commercial enterprises and special interest groups in addition to classic academic research institutions.

Quality of Research

LUMC is strongly committed towards integrity of research. There is a special Integrity code that researchers have to follow when conducting research. All animal, person related, embryo, stem cell and research with human body material has to comply to the highest possible integrity code standards. This is part of Good Research Practice (GRP).

Quality is an important aspect of research. LUMC maintains high quality research programmes. To measure this quality, the guidelines of the Standard Evaluation Protocol (SEP) are used. Once every six years an external review is performed by an independent audit committee. This guarantees that the quality of excellent research is maintained.

Research support

To help researchers with questions related to any facet of research, LUMC created the research support desk. The Research Support Desk aims to bundle all research related expertise and support units for researchers within the LUMC. Examples are e.g. queries concerning legislation and guidelines, grant applications, financial issues and how to approach data collection and analysis. Graduate school

The Graduate School of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) offers medical and biomedical PhD students a highly reputed research environment, excellent infrastructure and supervision, and in-depth scientific and transferable skill courses jointly developed by Leiden University and LUMC. The Graduate School Office facilitates PhD admission and registration for PhD students by means of the Graduate School Module.
