Departments and clusters: connecting research, healthcare and education
Every research group is part of a department. These departments are organized within six clusters that reflect LUMC's different medical specialties and areas of care.
Within each department or cluster, research, patient care, and education come together. Through this close collaboration, questions arising from daily practice can lead to new research. The knowledge gained through research is then translated back into patient care and the education of healthcare professionals. In this way, research, healthcare and education continuously strengthen one another.
Research themes: collaboration across departments
The most pressing health challenges do not stop at the boundaries of a department or discipline. That is why, in addition to being part of a department and cluster, research groups are also affiliated with one of LUMC's ten research themes.
Within these themes, researchers from different departments and clusters work together on societal and biomedical challenges. By combining knowledge and expertise from different disciplines, they generate new insights and develop solutions that would be difficult to achieve within a single department.
The research themes reflect both societal challenges and LUMC's scientific strengths. Through these collaborations, researchers work toward a better understanding of diseases, improved diagnostics, and more effective treatments.
Support and research facilities
Researchers are supported by the Directorate of Research and Valorization. The directorate provides advice on research policy, grant applications, intellectual property, and other aspects of the research process.
LUMC also offers a range of research facilities. These provide researchers with access to the specialized equipment, technologies, and expertise needed for groundbreaking research.
Research governance
Research at LUMC is overseen and supported by several governance bodies. Together, they are responsible for setting the strategic direction of research, safeguarding its quality, and promoting collaboration, talent development, and innovation.
